BTW, the gun sword, in addition to its slick melee animation, gives you a melee dash attack that quickly closes the distance to whatever enemy you’re aiming at when you press the melee attack button, and it enables you to do a multi-hit combo if you rhythmically tap the melee button as you attack. Neat, eh? Once I figured this out, the gun sword and the melee damage ability became my best friends. Lost Planet 2 rewards you for taking the risk required to get melee kills with more points for the slot machine. So why bother? Well, in Lost Planet 2, melee kills are much more consistently rewarded with boxes than ranged kills, which are only sometimes rewarded with boxes, depending on your equipped abilities. Melee attacks can take two to four hits to down standard infantry in LP2, which is quite a long time if you’re being shot up and stunned by other guys as you do it. Your standard post-Halo shooter usually rewards the risk inherent in getting up close to an enemy for a melee attack with a high-damage attack, often powerful enough to kill in one hit. Lost Planet 2 has its own answers to many of the conventions found in traditional shooters.
